Changing habits is challenging because it means rewiring our brain’s deeply ingrained neural pathways. Habits are behaviors we’ve repeated so often that they’ve become automatic. They live in a part of the brain called the basal ganglia, which focuses on efficiency and habit preservation, so when we try to break a habit, we’re going up against powerful neurobiology.
From a physiological standpoint, habits serve a survival purpose. They’re energy-saving mechanisms that allow us to perform tasks without overloading our cognitive capacity. This is why habit change often feels like climbing uphill; we’re pushing against our brain’s natural inclination for ease.
