One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that if you’re tired, overwhelmed, gaining weight, or feeling like you’re running on empty, you simply need to eat better and work out more. While those things absolutely matter, they’re only part of the picture. If you’ve been trying to do all the “right” things and still don’t feel like yourself, there may be something else your body is asking for.
I coach a lot of adults who feel like they’re constantly behind. They wake up already thinking about everything they have to accomplish before the day even begins. They’re juggling work, family, appointments, finances, and an endless to-do list. Somewhere along the way, they stop asking themselves how they’re doing because there’s always someone or something that feels more important.
The problem is that our bodies don’t know the difference between running from danger and running from responsibility. When we’re constantly rushing, multitasking, and carrying stress without ever slowing down, our nervous system stays on high alert. We become exhausted but struggle to rest. We crave sugar and caffeine because we’re searching for energy. We feel irritable, distracted, and wonder why we don’t feel better, even though we’re trying so hard.
One of the healthiest things you can do isn’t adding another supplement or finding a new workout program. It’s giving your body small moments throughout the day where it can finally feel safe enough to relax. That doesn’t mean an hour-long meditation or a weekend getaway. It can be as simple as taking five slow breaths before walking into work, eating lunch without your phone, sitting outside for a few minutes after dinner, or taking a short walk without listening to a podcast.
These moments may seem too small to matter, but they add up. They tell your body that not every minute has to be productive. They create space for your mind to settle, your breathing to slow, and your nervous system to recover. Ironically, those few minutes often give you more energy than pushing through another hour while running on empty.
If you’re feeling burned out right now, I want you to know this: you don’t need to earn rest. You don’t have to wait until your to-do list is finished before you take care of yourself. In fact, that day probably isn’t coming. Your health is built in the middle of real life, not after everything else is done.
So for this Wellness Wednesday, instead of asking yourself, “What else should I be doing?” try asking, “Where can I create five minutes of space today?” That one small habit might do more for your health than you realize.
Because becoming healthier isn’t always about doing more.
Sometimes it’s about finally giving yourself permission to do a little less.
