The Battle Between the Survival Brain and the Thinking Brain
Have you ever told yourself, “I know what to do… I just can’t seem to do it”? You’re not broken — your brain is just doing its job.
You have two key systems running at all times:
- The survival brain — fast, emotional, reactive. Its job is to keep you safe.
- The thinking brain — logical, intentional, long-term. Its job is to help you grow.
When stress, lack of sleep, or emotional overload kick in, your survival brain takes over. It shuts down focus, decision-making, and impulse control — not because you’re weak, but because your body thinks it’s under threat.
Mindset work retrains which system runs the show. Breathwork, journaling, slowing down before reacting — they all tell your nervous system, “We’re safe.”
This week’s practice:
Before reacting, take 3 slow breaths. Feel your feet on the floor. Then respond. You’re teaching your brain to lead with calm instead of chaos.
